LaMonica

LaMonica has two adult children, Neeco (30) and Gemeir (25), along with a male Yorkie toy poodle mix named Pinky (12). She currently works full-time at the Akron-Summit County Public Library. LaMonica is a volunteer for LBBC.org (Living Beyond Breast Cancer), a community outreach program whose mission is to connect people with trusted breast cancer information and a community of support. She enjoys traveling, shopping, music concerts, and spending time with family and friends.

In 2012, she discovered a lump during a breast self-exam in the shower. LaMonica was diagnosed with Stage 1 ductal carcinoma in situ in her left breast and underwent a lumpectomy. At the time of her reconstruction she hoped for symmetry, and for the breast to feel more natural after the removal of her previous silicone implants.

LaMonica underwent a DIEP flap in March of 2021 with Dr. Derek Cody and Dr. Lewis Diulus, and “Dr. Cody made me feel 20 again!” She had wanted to remove her implants since 2014 as they had become

uncomfortable and she experienced breast implant illness. She is very happy with her results.

LaMonica advises other woman that this chapter in life is an emotional and financial rollercoaster, but to “feel your faith in God. He will heal and restore your health. Use your resources and family and friends who want to help you. Be part of a support group and travel to help with mental burnout due to all the surgeries.”

LaMonica chose to walk the Pink Runway because she is proud to be a 12-year breast cancer survivor walking to honor those who are still fighting, and for those we have lost.

Finally, LaMonica encourages other ladies to be patient in healing, and to cry when you need to cry. Early detection saves lives! “Please read, do your research, ask questions, pray, and stay positive. Listen to your body and take your time with treatment decisions. And thank you to the Crystal Clinic staff and my family for your outstanding support!”
