Jen
Jen enjoys traveling and nature. Each morning, she pauses to drink coffee while watching the bluebirds in her crab apple tree. For two decades, she ran a small and rewarding dog-sitting business.
When she married her husband 28 years ago, she gained 2 stepsons, and together they share a 19-year-old daughter.
In 2019, Jen was diagnosed with stage 1A hormone-positive invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma. She had a left breast mastectomy and received an implant. Due to capsular contracture, the implant was removed and she had DIEP flap surgery with Dr. Derek Cody in 2023.
Jen says, “DIEP flap surgery was right for me. I came away with a natural and symmetrical left breast. The abdominal scar is still fading nicely.”
While everyone’s personal experience with cancer is different, Jen tried to have a positive mindset, be patient with herself, accept help, and stay active the best she could. She often listened to uplifting music.
Although quiet by nature, walking the Pink Runway is a meaningful opportunity to celebrate—while stretching beyond her comfort zone. It’s also a time to recognize her care team and show others that it’s possible to come through cancer feeling more empowered.
Jen says, “Thank you, Dr. Cody, for answering my many questions with patience and your serene presence—turning an uncertain time into a plan I could confidently embrace.”
